Hi.
I'm a database programmer. I do all sorts of programming, but clients usually hire me to do database work, and leave the other stuff to their in-house staff.
Normally, when I have coding problems, or I want to show off a great solution to a problem, I take it to another programmer on the team.
This time, there is no other programmer. I'm it.
Also, this time, I'm a part-owner.
It's a software project like many other's that I've taken on. It was written by a third party, and though they're still in the picture, the documentation is scarce, and the code has clearly been through several programmer's hands, so it lacks a consistent coding standards...if it had them in the first place.
The application is up and running and serving users. Some are happy and some are not. The administrators of the app are also mixed. They may not like the performance or the feature set, but there's an entrenched sense that what is there now works, so anything I change shouldn't break that.
And from their perspective, it does work.
Just not from mine. And I've got to whip it into shape while at the same time fielding requests from the business users.
I don't have anybody to hear my complaints, or share in my victories, so instead I have you. Hope you enjoy reading it.
